Girlie stuff

OK, so a couple of weeks ago I was reading stuff online and I found this story revealing the No. 1 beauty product British women can't live without. If I'd tried to guess what it was, I would have said Maybelline Great Lash mascara because everyone seems to love it (although, personally, I don't get it at ALL). But no, it wasn't mascara. It wasn't concealer or powder or even Chapstick. It was VASELINE. Vaseline!

So of course I had to scroll down and read all the comments, because I was like, what on earth are all these women using Vaseline for? I knew the foot trick (slather your feet in Vaseline, wrap them in plastic wrap, put on a pair of socks and sleep that way) and the lip trick (although I've always done it with Carmex), but apparently people use Vaseline on their face! And under their eyes! To take off makeup! To ward off wrinkles! To make their eyelashes longer! (Seriously, I went to makeupalley.com too, and people really swear it does that.) It turns out Tyra Banks is a massive Vaseline devotee--she even gave it away on her show (and looked crazy doing it, but whatever). I am WAY too scared to use it all over my face (although the stories of women who used it their whole lives and died without a single wrinkle tempt me more than you know) but I think I might test it out on the sides of my eyes to try to scare away crow's feet.

I am a COMPLETE sucker for this kind of stuff. I'm not, like, super high-maintenance or anything (I went to work three days in a row last week without washing my hair, how high-maintenance can I be?) but I still just LOVE it. I love the little tricks and cheap, fun things you can do and all of it. So, in honor of Miss Tyra's Vaseline, here are some of my "Vaselines", the fun, cheap little beauty products in my closet:

* Baby shampoo. I wash my hair with it every once in a while because it acts like a clarifying shampoo (getting rid of product buildup) but it's also obviously super gentle so it won't mess with hair color. I use it to hand wash my bras, too, and no, I am totally not kidding. It works like a charm. Plus it smells sooo good!

* Baby oil. Nothing in the world gets eye makeup off like a little bit of baby oil on a cotton ball. I also dump it on after I take a bath and it makes my skin super, duper soft.

* Baby powder. I pour some in my palm, rub my hands together, then lean over and put it on the roots of my hair when I don't feel like washing it. It soaks up all the oil and gives the hair a little lift. (Important note: It helps that I'm blonde. I wouldn't try it on dark hair unless you want to look like the dandruff fairy visited you in your sleep.)

* Hair gel. But I don't use it in my hair, ohhh, no. I put the teeniest, tiniest bit on my finger and swipe it across my eyebrows. I don't have crazy, crazy eyebrows, but it just makes them look better.

* Aspirin. Crush it up, mix it with a little water and put it on a zit until it dries. The pimple won't totally disappear, but it'll get smaller and go away faster. You can also mix up some aspirin with Cetaphil or aloe vera gel and make an exfoliating mask for your face.

* Lip/eye liner. I totally cheat sometimes by lining my lip and then putting clear gloss or Carmex over it instead of lipstick (Wet and Wild liner No. 666 is awesome for this, and it's 99 freaking cents). I'll also sometimes use an eyeliner over my whole eye instead of eyeshadow--it takes like two seconds and you can't really mess it up. (Just dust it with powder so it doesn't rub off.)

What about you? (And DO you use Vaseline? What do you think? I am BEYOND fascinated by that!)

I have to say that my mom is 78 years old and she has the facial skin of a baby's butt!!! No wrinkles. And she swears by vaseline!! She warms it up on a spoon and slathers it all over her face every night. I spend hundreds on Shisedo daily and night moisturizers and can only hope to look as good as her when I am 78!! Swishy, be careful with the baby oil on your eyes, it can clog the delicate pores and skin around your eyes. I used to use it and it caused little white bumps. I now use Almay oil free eye make up remover pads to take off my eye make up - they are inexpensive and work great! I am also a big fan of facial scrubs. I read an article about how men always look young because they are constantly exfoliating by shaving, and scrubs are the way women can do the same thing. Christie Brinklie is a fan of facial scrubs and she looks great.

Love you Swishy!

I used to use Vaseline on my eyelashes...I don't know why I stopped, But I think I'll get back to that.

I LOVE Smith's Rosebud Lip Salve...I think that's the name. And Burts Bee's.

I used to use #666 lip pencil too! But the number of it freaks me out.

I switch shampoo all the time, face cream all the time...but my mom used to use Cream of Wheat as a facial scrub. she kept a little container of it in the bathroom, and rubbed it on her face every night.

and I am TOTALLY going to try Vaseline on wrinkles....oh yes I am.

I am addicted to Carmex. CAN NOT live without it.

And I put hair gel on my eyebrows, too.

I don't have a crazy beauty routine, in fact, I use plain old Vaseline Intensive Care lotion on my face (I know, I know...GASP!) and I have been since I was like 15. So for the last 20 years, I have to say, my skin has been great.

I've definitely lathered my feet in Vaseline and put sock on to sleep at night, and that does work...feet are super soft in the morning!

olive oil does the same thing for the face...i hear this is very popular in italy. i did it once and instantly jonesed for pizza and bread sticks...

I have never used vaseline but perhaps I will give it a go! I use baby powder too in between shampooing. I have dark hair though, so I use it before I go to bed and in the morning when I wake up there is no powdery effect or anything.

I LOVE This post. Ms. Swishy, you've outdone yourself!

I also don't understand the whole Great Lash obsession...it's all clumpy on me. But I love Vaseline. If your skin is dry, it's the BEST thing to put on at night, even on your face (although don't get the one with "hint of aloe" or anything like that). Make sure you exfoliate first.

I use a tiny bit on my hands to calm flyaway hair, or to make the ends of my hair behave after I blowdry it.

Love cheap beauty secrets :)

I use Vaseline on my lips every night when I go to bed. I don't brush it off or anything, but it makes my lips so soft and not crackly like they can get in the winter. And I very rarely have to use Chapstick or any lip balm

I'm going to try Vaseline on my face. Although, how does it not clog up pores.

Also, I saw a link to an article that compared Crisco to some $500 night cream and Crisco worked better.

I use vaseline, I love it. I use it for chapped lips or on top of lipstick for a sheen. But I always use it on my legs after shaving I don’t know how I started that one but it feels so good and makes my legs sheen. I'm obsessed with sheen ;) And I use it after professional pedicures because for some reason I think my feet are extra dry after getting a pedicure. I cannot see using on my face as a moisturizer. I also use baby powder for my body whenever I want that smell b/c I think all baby products smell divine.

Vaseline? That sounds crazy to put it on your face but now I want to try it. Our weather here (freezing! psyche - wear shorts! wait - it's cold again!) has my skin completely discombobulated.

I'm a baby oil (after shower) user, too. Love the stuff. I usually add a little perfume oil to the bottles, though.

At 12:31 PM, Blogger Karen said...

Ok, first off, I could talk about this stuff for HOURS. LOVE PRODUCTS! (I'll try to self-edit)

I tend to stay away from Vaseline and/or anything containing oil, since I have sensitive skin that is as breakout-prone as my 17 year old sister (I'm almost 30). I use products from Nature's Gate (after Jenna Fischer pimped them out on myspace), and they work AMAZING. Way better than Cetaphil, Proactive, etc.

Also, I'm addicted to medicated chapstick. I have 4 of them right now (desk, purse, night stand, car.)

AND, my stylist gave me a bottle of argon oil from Morrocco for my hair. It is a MIRACLE! If you have thick hair, you must get it. It makes your hair dry almost instantly, but doesn't make it oily. Two catches: it's organic, so needs to be used with sulfate-free shampoo (I get mine at Target), and I'm not sure if there's special 'hair'/salon argon oil or if any old kind will from the Internet will do...

Thanks for starting bringing this up! Love to hear recommendations!

I love girly posts like this! And the comments! Soooo helpful!

So someone help me out here. How are yous supposed to use vaseline on your eyelashes? do you use it instead of mascara or underneath mascara?

I also use hair gel on my eyebrows. And here I thought I was being especially crafty to come up with that.

At 2:15 PM, Blogger Celia said...

Ok, I am also obsessed with Carmex. I currently have the original and Cherry flavors in my purse. I use Vaseline on my lips morning and night. I also use it on my husbands elbows to prevent cracking.
I'm kind of scared to try it on my face but if all these people think it works, I'll try it!

At 3:37 PM, Blogger flea said...

my hairdresser has sworn by using vaseline on her face for years and I would always just laugh at her and think ?? how can you use vaseline on your face, wouldn't it make you break out?? so i've never tried it!

and like you i'm sort of scared to but seeing how a lot of people say it works I just may have too

very interesting post, love all the hints!

i've never tried the asprin thing on a zit but I have used toothpaste in the past and it drys them up overnight too

At 3:37 PM, Blogger Swishy said...

OK, Monnik, this is my guess: Maybe you put the Vaseline on eyelashes at night and then mascara in the morning? Anyone?

I LOVE THIS STUFF! Keep it coming!!

I break out VERY easily but will use Vaseline on my face when it gets dry (which is rare with my oily skin).

My beauty secret is getting a white concealer stick and using it in the very corners of my eyes and just the tiniest dab underneath and on my eye lids and I look wide awake all day. I have been working 12 hours, 6 days a week handling Hurricane Ike claims so I need all the help I can get.

I am VERY intrigued by this asprin thing. I almost hope it doesn't work on my skin or what have I been spending my money on!?

Swishy's Health and Beauty Tips!

Good list you've got here.

Body Shop has a great line of aloe vera facial scrubs and moisturizers . . . for those of us with fussy sensitive skin.

I could maybe use vaseline around my eyes, but anywhere else and I'm pretty sure my skin would freak out. My favorite product is Clinique's Pore Minimizer. It is AMAZING!

At 11:02 PM, Blogger Michelle said...

I think I'm going to go buy some Vaseline tomorrow. Hmmm. I'm still trying to figure out the eyelash thing though!

And I've never heard of the aspirin to make a pimple go away, but I've used toothpaste before.

Sadly, I've got nothing for tips. But I like seeing the ones you have!

I am a Vaseline Foot Slatherer.

Other beauty tip: Windex on your face for zits. Oh wait. That was My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

I got nothing.

But when you were talking about Baby Powder and putting it in your palm and leaning over and then ...

I thought you were going to say you rub it all over in between and under your boobs to keep them fresh from sweating, which is what I would do, but then again, I'm about a decade older than you and I'm a saggy beeyotch to boot.

I am a HUGE fan of baby oil - I like Johnson's Baby Oil Gel - it's a little less slimey and soaks in really well. It also comes in Lavendar, so it doesn't smell quite so baby-y.

I use baby oil on my body every day after I shower in the winter especially. But sometimes I also just use it on my face. That being said, I use products from my dermatologist including Retin-A and alpha hydroxy compounds, so I just use the baby oil once or twice a week to really soften my skin. It doesn't clog my pores but then again the other two derm things I use are major exfoliants.

I love this post - beauty secrets are so FUN!

I don't use Vaseline, but I might have to try. Never heard of the foot trick, but I think I could become a believer.

And if you can get past the smell, Vicks vapo-rub does double duty for hands and lips in this drying, harsh season. Also wards off unwanted advances by the hubby when you are too tired to think straight, let alone, you know. Might just make him think you are sick or something. NOT that I've ever resorted to such trickery.

I'm just sayin ...

Only tip I know is to heat some milk in the micro, then brush it on your face with a cotton ball. Wait a few minutes and rinse. Smooth as silk.

Love the girlie posting!

my mom used a petroleum based cleanser on her face for as long as i remember. it wasn't vaseline, but in the same vein. she's 67 i believe and has amazing skin. i was always afraid of breakouts, but i have some vaseline, so i'll give it a shot!

At 2:34 AM, Blogger shopgirl said...

What great tips there - tipster mctippy! I do, actually use vaseline to remove make up - especially my eye make up - have always used to to remove any smudges that occur while doing my make up too! It's super sensitive on the eyes too - since some eye makeup removers can sting a little. And - it's way cheaper than my Clinique eye makeup remover!! But, I've never tried it on my face - I'll have to give it a whirl!
Thanks for sharing!!

At 2:39 PM, Blogger Vanessa said...

Vaseline??? No, I don't use it, don't have any in the house. I try not to put products made from petroleum on my body because, you know, it's PETROLIUM!

At 1:28 PM, Blogger Betty said...

I have been known to use Vaseline when my skin feels particularly dry. But it shines! Everybody knows I'm wearing Vaseline! If it's a day when I want to attract attention, I just slather it on. They might just think I'm a teenager.

The kind I use is a non-petroleum vaseline from Whole Foods. But they probably don't have that in north dakota, which is my latest location guess....

Queen Helene Mint Julep Mask $3.99 at walgreens and it sucks all of the gunk out and it makes your face feel fresh and clean!

I also do the aspirin thing- it's the salic-whatever acid in it that shrinks the pimple, I think!

Also- I use albolene when I'm wearin a TON of makeup and I want to remove it. It's pretty much the same as vaseline- you rub it all over your face and then rub it back off with a cotton ball. All of the makeup comes off, but it leaves your skin feeling smooth!

I don't use it all of the time because I afraid of a breakout... but now I'm thinking a pimple or two may be worth it if it means that I won't get wrinkles!!!

At 6:22 PM, Blogger Bina said...

I had no idea about the lip trick, and considering the fact it's been freaking cold, and windy here, I currently have the lovely lip peel and flaking going on so I'm gonna try this. And wouldn't vaseline clog your poor and cause a breakout?
