Best buy

So I was sitting on the bathroom counter with my feet in the sink, listening to the radio and getting ready for work like I always do, when I went to put on my lipstick. I took off the cap, put on the lipstick, and said out loud to myself, "Wow ... this lipstick sure was money well spent!"

The talking out loud to myself while sitting on my bathroom counter with my feet in the sink? Not the slightest bit unusual. The part where I said something that would come out of the mouth of a 75-year-old? A little more unusual ... but it's true! I ADORE my lipstick. I got it for free in this Oprah contest I won, believe it or not, and it just happened to be the most perfect shade ever so NATURALLY it got discontinued a few years later. Well. I tracked that little lipstick down and got two tubes sent to me. At the time, I was like, should I really order two? Because it's kinda pricey, and maybe I'll find a shade I like just as much or better before I go through them both, and blah blah blah. Well, I most certainly have NOT found a replacement shade and let me tell you, that extra tube of lipstick (I could only order two) is turning out to be one of the best things I have ever bought. Because it bought me time. Which is money. Or at least pretty lips.

So then I was like, what other things have I bought that have turned out to be awesome purchases? My couch, for sure. I was driving around one day running errands, and I passed this furniture store that was having a going-out-of-business sale. I went in, saw it and bought it for half-price. I NEVER do things like that. Usually I have to sit and think about it and make bar graphs and pie charts about the pros and cons and ask everyone from my best friend to the mailman what they think, but that day, I just did it. It was a complete impulse buy and I am SO glad I did it. I love, love, LOVE my couch. It doesn't look like anything special, but it is awesome. It's sage green with brown trim and ... let's see ... seven pillows, and I sleep on it at least once a week.

And my glasses. I don't remember how old I was when I got my first pair of glasses, but suffice it to say every single pair I owned from that point on was absolutely terrible. Horrible, horrible, ugly, unflattering glasses. When I broke my cheekbone in high school, I wore one contact and bumped into walls for three months because I was too vain to wear my glasses. HORRIBLE glasses.

So last year, as you may recall, I finally decided to get new glasses. And since I'd never picked out a pair I liked, I let the ladies in the doctor's office pick them out for me ... and I actually wear them sometimes! Miracle of miracles! I was there the other day and they dilated my pupils, so I had to wear glasses for a while ... and I actually ran errands in glasses! In public! With people around! So yes, money very well spent.

(The lipstick and the glasses. My place is too messy right now to take a picture of the couch.)

So what have been YOUR best purchases?

OK, that is SOOOO phallicky. That photo. YOu know it is.

And did I spell that right?

But seriously, that looks like a penis!

My best purchase I have not made YET... BUT it will be on February 14 when I announce the winner of the Manic Blood Donor contest and pay money from my own pocket to one of those donors.

Because I am purchasing a gift to say thank you to someone who has done something to save some lives.

How is that for totally sentimentally-cheesy-goofy-almost-making-Swish-wanna-go-out-with-her cute-glasses-and-lipstick-and-go donate-blood-now?

Maybe THAT's why I like it!!! Ha.

My car. I was driving a 17 year old Acura Integra (my dad bought it new in 1988!) when I finally bit the bullet and got a used-but-new-to-me Honda Civic. I LOVE IT. It was an absolute lifestyle change to go from freaking out that I might not make it to & from work in my Acura, to actually having the freedom to drive 10 hours down to Tennessee to visit my parents in the Honda without a worry in the world.

A breast pump that retails for $319, never been used, and I paid $50.

A $10 black & decker electric chopper thing. Love it, and it's lasted....YEARS.

I'd say my iPod Touch is the best right now. I've had several other "best buys" that have been taken over by my kids or wife, so I don't like them as much anymore.

I just got a new laptop for $200, and it works great, and it will do everything I need and want it to do, which is basically schoolwork and writing. My son has pretty much taken control of it, and get this, says he'll give me $50 for it! Nice try. The other day I brought it to work with me and didn't get home until after 10pm, because of class, he was so devastated.

Oh and when I match Manic's money for the blood draw, I'll feel pretty good too!

I don't see YOUR picture there yet, Swishy. What's up with that?

At 9:36 AM, Blogger Monnik said...

hmmm. best buys for me were my treadmill - i use it way more than anyone thought i would - and my tea kettle that makes me all cozy just to think about.

At 10:17 AM, Blogger Swishy said...

Oh, YEAH! Of COURSE my laptop! That thing is like my child.

And I am scared to donate blood!

Okay, I've got a draft of almost the exact same post on blogger--how funny is that? (I'm hoping this means I'm gettting a bit more Swishy-like!) I love the idea of talking about the great things we buy. Kind of a nice counterpoint to all the talk about how most of our purchases sit around unused and taking up space. Well done!

My favorites:
My slippers (which cost more than my favorite shoes, but are more than earning their keep)

Mary Kay Classic Basic #1 moisturizer. Dry skin is no fun at all.

Papermate ballpoint pens with the squishy sides.

A boppy, a pregnancy organizer, nars blush and comfy loungewear from old navy that fits over my belly.

Is that lipstick Estee Lauder? I know I recognize the outside of it but just can't quite put my finger on it. Pretty shade! There is NOTHING BETTER than the perfect shade of lipstick!

Oh, and my best purchase three years ago? MY HOUSE! The price was right becuz I was a single chick trying to buy a home with not much money...that was SCARY. I love my little home and to me it symbolized PURE independence!

Hands down my puppies. Who knew- you can buy love.

Also love my Mac laptop. Love it.

Love the glasses and I think we have the same couch (how weird would that be, does that make me your stalker).

I have this short sleeve sweater shirt I got at Target. I wasn't sure about the color, the style or price and wasn't going to buy it. My husband made me buy it (isn't he wonderful). It is now my favorite thing to wear.

best buy: my 1st car. '78 Toyota Corolla, was 10 years old when i got it for $1,000. i drove it for 5 years and when it died, my ex-husband's cousin bought it from the shop where i abandoned it for $50 and drove it for another year or two.

best recent buy: my CAbi coat. i LOVE it and where it everywhere. it's just the right thickness. i hesitated to buy it bc it was a little pricey, but it's adorable and i get lots of compliments on it.

my glasses are very similar to yours ... or at least appear to be. they were one of my favourite purchases of the last year ... the frames were on sale for $15 ... with the lenses, they cost less than $80 ... crazy!!

i have a lip gloss that i am loving at the moment (cover girl wetslicks in pomegranate), but i fear that it was just a holiday colour ... i should have bought 5.

Is that Lancome lipstick? I bought two bottles of their nail polish once in a peachy pink that I loved and then they discontinued it.

Other than that...my puppies, my PDA (HP iPAC), and my razr cellphone. I'd add my oakleaf hydrangea but then I'd sound ancient...

i think you look super hot in your glasses. my best purchase would be anything i have bought for you. cheeeeeeeeesy!

My best buy is the dining room table and chairs that I bought for $50 used. Since it's used, I don't mind if it gets scratched, and it's been used at least daily since the time of purchase.

I love that color! AND the glasses..

let's see, my best purchase?...hmmmm......well, my sewing machine, for one, cuz I love it. But make-up? Probably Smith's Rosebud salve...and Tarte cheek stain in Tickled. LOVE it, and a little bit goes a long way.

OK, i need to find me that pen that Trish Ryan loves. I can never find a GOOD pen. And a laptop. I'm in search of a laptop. I have never had one.

I just dropped $300 on a pair of versace eyeglasses (that's with the help of health insurance) so I'm hoping my new glasses are a good purchase as well.
My house.
My dog.
My car.
My computer.
My seatbelt bag.
My camera

what is that shade of lipstick? I think I have a clinique one that is close to that.

Airline tickets and psych drugs. That about sums me up.

Hmm, let's see - -

** My Vidalia Onion Chopper. It really DOES work. Peel the onion, cut in half, place on the grate, and close the lid. Presto!

** My Jeep Liberty. Never owned a 4-wheel drive before, but will never be without one from now on!

** Our Marriage License - - yes, I'm the one who paid for it 22 years ago. Best investment I ever made (my Dear Hubby is a sweetie like none other!)

Best thing I ever purchased? I would have to say my house followed by my IPod and my laptop. I am sitting here thinking of all kinds of things I do not regret buying which makes me think I may have a shopping addiction.

My best purchases have been influenced by episodes of Sex and the City.

My columbia rain jacket. Way over priced, but I have used it for 5 years now, still like new, and I use it all the time. It is great!!! Also, my laptop and i-pod and my kayak.
Could not live without my clinique or the ultra magnified make up mirror from Brookstone.

Mine was a projector and sound system which together is still a good amount less than any 50" flat panel TV. The picture is better than a TV three times more expensive and the screen can be three times as large.

OK, inquiring minds--my lipstick is Bobbi Brown shimmer gloss stick in Cocoa Malt. I had to call the Estee Lauder help line for like three weeks straight until I got through, and they capped me at two. I don't know what I'll do when I'm done with this one!

At 12:09 PM, Blogger KC said...

Best purchase? A $5.00 beside table that I picked up at a garage sale and repainted for my daughter.

It wasn't about the bedside table, it was about how thrilling it was to an 8 year old to have a "grownup" bedside table with a drawer.

The drawer....yes....has become an eclectic collection of loot bags, bread ties, old shoelaces and other items that apparantly can be used for crafts.

But she feels very grownup.
Cost of bedside table: $5.00
Time and energy: 3 hours painting
cost of giving daughter sense of independence: priceless

I would have to say my best purchase ever was my big king size bed! We got married young & we were so poor, so we got a queen bed (which was great too) from the store my husbands aunt worked at so we could get a discount. We could never afford a bedframe or a bedroom set, so we just had a bed & an old hideous dresser from when I was little.
Anyhow, last year we went & bought a fabulous CUTE black slat-sleigh bed. It's beautiful & the comfy-est thing EVER!! I LOVE it!!!

My pets. $200 worth of Lab/Basset Hound mix, and two of the sweetest cats ever, $50 each.

They keep me warm in bed (they lay on me and not Mr. Hot). They're sitting here with me now. And they actually all get along.

I spent thirty five bucks on three bits of desktop organizing things from Target. I rarely pay full price and these were ten dollar canvas covered square boxes and a 15 dollar canvas covered shallow file box -- 35 dollars worth of glorified cardboard -- I almost didn't do it. They are so very functional and look so great in the space and with my other things...best expensive boxes ever.

Ok this is kinda sad but my crock pot is my best one. I use that baby all the time!
Love your glasses, sooo cute!

Oooh I LIKE the glasses! I need to get some new ones. I feel like mine make me look waaay to stern. My husband disagrees, but I gotta go with my gut, right?

Pretty lipstick too.
