All aboard the niceness train

If you came here looking for a cute story, you are in LUCK!

So. I'm out running errands and I'm like, oh, crap, I have to get gas. So that's what I do.

I always get bored when I'm putting gas in the car. I love that I can sit on my couch and do nothing for hours and be perfectly fine with it, but standing for 97 seconds and doing nothing while I wait for the gas tank to fill up? TORTURE! If I talk on the phone, I might blow up. If I get back in the car, I might blow up. At least according to the scary emails my mom forwards me. So I usually (sloppily, half-assedley) wash the windows instead.

So I'm washing the windows, and all of a sudden this guy comes up to me and hands me a rose, one of the roses they sell inside the gas station. "Here," he says. "I hope you're having a great day." He turns around, and I'm like, "Thank you!" And he's like, "Have a great day!"

And then he gets in his truck, waves and honks his horn a few times as he passes me, and drives away.

Can you believe that? Isn't that random?! No asking my name, no asking my number. He just gave me a flower and told me to have a nice day. He wasn't even a weirdo! He was a nice, normal-looking young guy. And while I was pumping gas, no less! SO NICE!

So now I feel like I need to pay it forward and do something nice for someone. Any suggestions?

And hey! I know you're supposed to do nice things for no reason, but let's do this. If you want to do something nice for someone (anything nice, including entering Manic's contest!) and put it in the comments, I'll pick one of them out of a hat at the end of the week and send the winner a prize. Yeah? Sound good? OK, good.

Awwww. Being nice is so ... nice. I love it.

That rocks--yay random guy :)

My favorite nice thing was the time I went through a toll booth and whoever was in front of me had paid my toll already.

My favorite random nice thing was when I was in the drive-thru at McDonald's...the person in front of me had paid for my meal and told the cashier to just tell me to have a nice day. What a nice surprise.

i think that it was your karma coming back to you in the form of a stranger and a rose. either that or you are sooo hot when you pump gas that he was compelled to thank you...

I like the "pay the toll" thing.

You could buy a $5 starbucks card and give it to a frazzled mom next time you are grocery shopping (there's always a frazzled mom at the grocery).

Sometimes I drop a quarter where someone will happen upon it because it's always fun to find money. Especially if a kid finds it, they think they're rich!
Or leave change in the vending machine.

How sweet is that? Hmm, I'm getting good ideas. I will often let a person with one item go ahead of me in the grocery store, not a big thing but something none the less.

Let's see. The other day when I was going into Wal-mart, I took an empty shopping cart from an old lady, so she wouldn't have to push it the million miles to the cart corral. I didn't even need a cart that day.

What I like to do is to brush the snow off cars in the parking lot, when it has snowed during the work day.

I like the idea of dropping quarters. Thats really cute.

how about doing something nice posting that blog you wrote last week about a certain somebody. great idea!

LOL I hate waiting for my tank to fill too! Drives me nuts...and they don't even have those little stopper things anymore either so that I can get back in the car and listen to music. Those were the days.

Lucky you with your random admirer.

You know what would have really been great? If he pumped your gas for you too. Just sayin. Can you tell I'm in a cranky mood?

Aw. and it was such a beautiful rose too!

Awwwwww. You tell the best stories!

A really nice thing to do would be for everyone to go donate some of their FREE blood this month, and take a photo! And send to Manic cuz you could win MONEY!!! lotsa money ... FROM ME!!! Read about it at my blog (sorry Swish, but I know you don't mind me doubly-pimping the contest)...

I think sometimes just a nice smile and a have a nice day shocks people when it's unexpected and out of the blue, but heck, I'd take a rose any day! And it was so pretty !!! And so are you Swishy!

Oh, Diva says she'd take a rose too!

here is my good deed: today our handyman was across the street at our elderly neighbor's house fixing their driveway after he had fixed ours. i knew that the neighbors didn't have what was needed to fix the driveway, ie sand, quick-crete and regular concrete mix, so i went across the street and grabbed the handyman (lupe!) and told him to take the stuff from our garage to fix the neighbor's driveway. he did and i have felt great all day!

That is totally sweet. I deserved to get that pretty red rose, and I am glad it made you smile. I love the concept of random kindness. It is just such a good feeling.
XOXO

How about paying $20.00 for someone else's gas since it happend at a gas station? Or if you have any spare books etc.. you can donate them to an old person's home or the local hospital they are always on the look out for that stuff...

That's such a sweet thing. My favorite nice thing was on my birthday one of my coworkers brought in two waffle irons and made waffles for the eight of us in the department.

Go buy a nice takeout meal, like about $10 worth, and go give it to somebody on the street. My mom and I did it for somebody once, and he looked like he was going to pee his pants he was so happy.

(geek alert) You're allowed to sit in your car while the gas tank fills up...just touch a metal part of the car before taking the pump handle out of your car....touching the car discharges the any static electricity that built up on you while you were sitting in the car.

At 11:22 PM, Blogger Manic Mom said...

OK WAIT!!!

I ALWAYS SIT IN MY CAR WHILE THE GAS IS PUMPING!!

Is this not allowed? What will happen to me and my precious children?

(obviously nothing; i've been doing this forever. Is this an urban myth or something? I've heard the cell phone one, but this one is new to me!)

Loving, loving, LOVING everyone's cute ideas! So simple! So nice! LOVE 'EM!

Mike, you're so smart :)

I paid someone's overdue fine at the public library.

I'm also donating magazines to hospitals for their waiting rooms.

At 9:29 AM, Blogger Melek said...

i can't believe you didnt snap a phone photo of him! :)

manic: the theory is, if you slide across your fabric seat when you get in/out of the car, it can build up a static charge, which can then discharge when you touch the gas handle, igniting the gasoline and burning you to smithereens. so yeah, touch something metal before you touch the pump.

as for paying it forward, i like the taking the grocery cart back up to the store for someone who is unloading their car. always thrills me when someone does that for me.

Note to Manic...not an urban legend. There is usually a small sign posted on the pump somewhere that says not to re-enter your car. My father's secretary got back in her car last year and didn't ground herself by touching metal when she got back out...when she grabbed the pump to finish, she created a spark which in turn created a huge fireball. Luckily, she was ok.

What a delightful thing to do...just because. I love it!!

Pay for the coffee of the person behind you in Starbucks the next time you go on one of your writing adventures.

Or go enter Manic's contest. :)

This is not random. This is due no doubt to the fact you are smokin hot.

One day last winter, my husband was working overtime at the factory, which is just down the road from where I work. One day we had a big snowstorm, and it was still coming down as I left work, along with some strong winds. He was scheduled to get off work about 20 minutes after me. I drove to the factory's parking lot, started up his truck to get it all warmed up inside, cleaned off all his windows, and was waiting at the gate when he clocked out so I could drive him to his truck.

You should have seen the looks on the faces of his co-workers - - they were totally amazed!
