Memory lane

OK, I saw this somewhere the other day, and I had to laugh. Ohhh, how I laughed. Everyone thinks the '80s has the market cornered on embarrassing fashion and regrettable hair, which ... OK, it does. But in response, I give you the often overlooked early '90s, captured in fine form on the classic "Voices that Care" video. Do you remember this video? I do. Do I ever. Would you believe that, 15 years later, I still remember every word of this song? I'm not sure if I should be admitting that, but I do. And I am not above singing along.

Anyway. The video is an absolute cornucopia of unfortunate '90s pop culture. A super-young Celine Dion! A perfectly coiffed Peter Cetera! A rapping Fresh Prince! The one-hit wonder Nelson twins! Kenny G! And, of course, Michael Bolton, who is worthy of a whole post of his own.

My favorite part, however, is the end, when a camera pans across a sea of earnest celebrities singing in unison. It's the funnest game of "Name that Celeb" ever. A bespectacled Alan Thicke. A pre-tattooed Mike Tyson, wearing a patterned sweater. And in the front row, a pubescent Fred Savage sneaking glances at older woman Alyssa Milano, who actually looks quite terrible but nevertheless is undoubtedly fulfilling every one of young Fred's fantasies all the same.

Happy Friday, everyone!

Did you just fix the embedding? Because it was all shmoopedy-pooh a few minutes ago, and now there's a visible video instead.

At 2:19 AM, Blogger Swishy said...

I did! I don't know why it was screwed up the first time.

I also forgot to mention the random neon effects in the middle. I think that's a Dire Straits thing. Totally rad!

Why did these people "Care"? Did something happen in Africa? I was probably eleven at the time, so I was between Macaulay Culkin and Elijah Wood obsessions.

Great start to a Friday! So funny. Especially the blonde who removes her sunglasses as she's singing, who was that?? And the expression on Kenny Rogers' face at the end is priceless..."Why didn't I get a solo part?"...or maybe I'm reading too much into it.

At 8:36 AM, Blogger Melek said...

how is it that i dont remember this at all?? maybe i blocked it from memory.... or maybe i'm just that old....

At 11:08 AM, Blogger Stephanie said...

When Celine appeared I thought "oh is that Amy Grant pre-tweezers" and then I fell out of my chair when she started singing and realized who she really was.

I was going to mention the Dire Straights neon thing too. So hilarious! Loved seeing Nicolette Sheridan and Harry Hamilin togehter also.

Dude but who was the guy at the very end singing?

At 12:18 PM, Blogger Patti said...

michael bolton pre-haircut/opera singer!

At 1:06 PM, Blogger In-Between Panic Attacks said...

Whew- Fred Savage, Nelson, Michael Bolton... that was an indulgent blast from the past, thank you!!! HAHAHHA, you know all those people are like, "Damn my agent for making me do that, and the inventors of YouTube". They thought that was long forgotten.

At 1:09 PM, Blogger Sherry said...

I do not remember this video at all...the song is vaguely familiar...is it because I'm Canadian? Or just older? Or OMG...BOTH!?!?! LOL!! :)

At 1:12 PM, Blogger In-Between Panic Attacks said...

Bianca- I believe this came out at Desert Storm- my dad was deployed for that and I seem to remember seeing this at some family support event.

At 1:54 PM, Blogger Beth said...

so cool dude!!! Rad!

Wow...do I feel old right now...and who was that woman singing with Bobby Brown> and what. in. the. HELL. did the nelson Twins do to thier hair?!!! Good Lord!!! That should be against the law or something...wow..good times, good times.

At 2:31 PM, Blogger Trish Ryan said...

The early 1990s were just the fallout years from the fashion/music debacle of the decade before. The presence of Mike Tyson there is perhaps the greatest gift of all...

At 2:37 PM, Blogger Trish Ryan said...

Nope, wait--I take that back. Upon further reflection, the best part of that video is the expression on Kevin Costner's face:

"How the %$^# did I end up here? I am SO firing my agent when this is over!"

OK, seriously, you guys, you have no idea how it's killing me not to be able to ID some of these people. I'm like, WHO IS THAT??? Like, yes, the woman with the glasses. And the guy at the end. I even went on Wikipedia (yes, it has its own entry) and looked at the list of participants.

I don't remember this at all.

Turning 40 didn't make me feel old, but this does -- Kurt Russel with his baby face and there's dead people alive and well here, and who is that guy at the end?

I like how the guy from Chicago is working the voice effects on his solo part -- not weird at all.

At 10:48 AM, Blogger Karen said...

Oh. My. God. I have no recollection of this travesty or else Will Smith has used his Men In Black powers to expunge it from my memory as he makes his way to every household across the US and Canada.

I predict that will be the 1990s unit in future history classes. What else do you need: Sports (Orel Hersheiser! Ahmad Rashad!), Hollywood (Harry Hamlin! Meryl Streep!), music (one word. Nelson.), grab bag (Downtown Julie Brown! Rick Dees!). It's unnervingly perfect.

On the positive side (I'm trying to be more positive), Luther, RIP, you are missed. This does not besmirch your memory in my opinion. Amazingly.

And Jimmy Buffett stanting next to John Lovetz. Whats up with that?

At 3:48 PM, Blogger Sara Hantz said...

HAHAHAHAHAH thanks for the memory jogger!!

i must've blocked this one out...i think it was probably cuz i was never a luther vandros fan (god rest his soul..)

and i totally think the "chick" with the glasses is totally a man, from some rock band...and i'm so not watching that again to confirm this but i'm pretty sure...

good times though, brings back a lot of memories

and i'm so dying to know who that was at the end...i too thought elton john, but i don't think it is....??

I remember feeling all warm and fuzzy the first time I saw this video. I so believed they really did want to "stand tall and stand proud".

Who the crap IS the dude in the end? I'm so confused. Why didn't I question that when I was busy getting chills watching Brooke Sheilds sing with Chevy Chase back in the day?

At 10:41 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well... I can help some of you FINALLY get some sleep. The balding guy with glasses at the end (he also had a line in the song, but well-- he aint the prettiest thing to look at, so I guess they cut in someone or something else)
His name was Warren Wiebe, and he did a lot of voice work and commercials and such in LA, but he was 'the voice of the LA Kings" - he did the National Anthem for years, leading up to his death in the late 90s.

The chick with the hat? Easy one, believe it or not-- its none other than TIFFANY!

And now, back to your regularly scheduled Monday Morning, already in progress...

At 12:01 PM, Blogger KATE said...

Oh my word Swishy! This is one reason why you're one of my Favorites!! Holy cow, how funny is that video? It's so funny how much things have changed, hair, clothes, dang near everything. How funny!

Thanks for the trip down memory lane & the laugh!!

At 1:07 PM, Blogger Johnny B said...

I don't remember this video/song at all, but I do remember Bobby Browns AWESOME leather hat that he always wore! And Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan were standing together, but they made Dominique Wilkins stand by himself...great stuff.

At 3:10 PM, Blogger Jenster said...

How about Cindy Crawford with Richard Gere and Nicolette Sheridan with Harry Hamlin, even though Michael Bolton was there.

It's kinda like musical chairs... musical celebrities.

OH! And Ted Dansen, Mary Steenburgen and Whoopie Goldburg - and I'm thinking Ted was still married to his wife at the time.

At 3:29 PM, Blogger Swishy said...

John! You are a genius!
