Fun fact of the day

Because you know we're all about the fun facts around here: It's the CD's 25th birthday today!

So, naturally, when I read that on Thursday, I started asking everyone at work if they remembered the first CD they ever bought and what their favorite CD of all time was. This led to all kinds of revelations, such as the fact that one guy I work with has actually NEVER bought a CD and the fact that apparently I am the only person on the planet who doesn't think Joshua Tree is the best U2 CD.

I definitely remember the first CD I got: Boyz II Men, Cooleyhighharmony. (It was all Bangles and Debbie Gibson cassette tapes up 'til then.) The last CD I bought? The Garden State soundtrack ... THREE YEARS ago!

My favorite CD ... I very, VERY rarely like entire CDs unless they're soundtracks, but I have a big soft spot for August and Everything After by the Counting Crows. Every time I started to get a little sick of it, I'd find another song on there I decided I loved. I'm not sure what my favorite song on there is ... Sullivan Street? Either Sullivan Street or A Murder of One, probably.

(Other random fun fact: I was reading somewhere else today, totally unrelated, that the Counting Crows are rereleasing that album next month, in a two-disc set that features an undoubtedly smashed Adam Duritz and the boys in concert in Paris.)

So ... what's your favorite/first CD?

I think it might have been the Batman sountrack with Seal singing that rose song. Plus all the ones I stole from my dad... James Brown and Elmo & Patsy's Christmas CD!

The last one I bought was the Counting Crows greatest hits... and that was before I bought my house, so more than 3 years ago.

Speaking of, the new CC album is going to be a 2 disk set I believe, called Saturday Night & Sunday morning. Might be released this fall. (That could be something different than the Paris live album, I don't have all the deets.)

for the life of me, I cannot remember my first cd...I'm trying really hard, but it just won't come to me..

I very rarely like an entire CD, just like you...but right now I'm LOVING Elliott Yamin's cd...the whole thing...and old Madonna...and Prince...old Motown...ahh, the list goes on!

The CD is 25? What? CDs were around when I was 5? Really?

I have absolutely no idea what my first CD was. I do know that I did get them through one of those music clubs, so I paid a penny for it. Or whatever their gimmick was.

Plus $17 shipping.

The last CD I bought was when I moved from CA to IL in 2005, for the long road trip. It was 13 Going on 30's soundtrack. Which is just awesome.

I am a big U2 fan..you noted you don't think that JTree is the best..curious what is your fave? For old version its Boy for the newer wave I dig Actung a lot.

Argh, I loved August and Everything After! I love every song on it. I think I have a soft spot for Anna Begins. It's just a good song. I'm not sure what my first CD was, either, but the first one I can remember receiving is Use Your Illusion 1 by obviously Guns N' Roses. *content sigh*

That is a great Counting Crows CD...thanks for reminding me :)

Happy birthday CD! May you have more longevity than the 8-track or the cassette tape, even now that iTunes is in the world!

Murder of One Live ROCKS! I've blogged about the words in that song... heavenly.

My first CD... dear God!The last one I probably bought was Kids Bop or High School Musical... the first one... God, I'm too freaking old. I even remember eight tracks, although they were totally on the way out when I discovered them.

You're making me want to listen to music!

Yeah, that Counting Crows two-disc one is a different two-disc one. I saw that somewhere else too, yesterday ... Pop Candy, maybe?

And as far as U2, I said I liked Achtung Baby better. I guess I don't feel that passionately about it, though.

Can't even remember the first CD I bought Possible it could have been a Red Hot Chili Pepper CD. I didn't have a CD player until I married my Hubby in 1993. He had one.

The last one I bought was actually two Icky Thump by The White Stripes and Black Sabath the Dio years. Both for Hubby and I.

How lame am I that I can't remember my first CD? I rarely buy CDs anymore, although I did purchase the Lost Highway (Bon Jovi) album on iTunes. Does that count?

My first CD was a set from the Rolling Stones, Beatles and REM. Also, Meatloaf, Prince, Elton John, Todd Rundrgren...Hello it's me, Garth Brook, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Talking Heads.....mostly 80's college stuff. Now I feel old. Get me out, with a few drinks, I can still rock with the best of them!!!
Fun Post Swishy!
Now my CD purchases are High School Muscial 1 and 2, Hannah Montana, That's so Raven, and Vanessa Hudgkins and pretty much all the preteen ones. Plus, my teen is obsessed with Broadway, so anything on Broadway she owns and blasts. She knows it is not cool and could care less.
Someday, I will buy CD's for me again, I just know it. Until then, its Satellite Radio for me.

I can't remember what my first CD was. I do know that Todd and I bought our first CD player with wedding money in 1988.

I can't do favorites. I like too many.

Way back when I bought my own stereo system (a grown-up one, ya know), the salesman was playing The Police's "Syncronicity" and it sounded soooo good. Anyway, I bought the record (yes, vinyl - I know, I'm ancient) as the first record to play on that stereo. Fast forward to when I got my first cd player....yep, I bought "Syncronicity" again, on cd. I still love it. But don't really like The Police. Go figure.

Fun post, Swishy!

For me, the CD lacks any great desire to reminisce (partly because I couldn't tell you to save my soul what was my first CD)...I desire to think about my albums in there Peaches record crate. Only the coolest of cool kept there albums in the Peaches crate...albums like Sytx Grand Illusion or Journey Infinity. Stop now! Look what you've done to me, made me all nostalgic and such...

My first 8 track was Captain and Tennille's Love Will Keep Us Together.
